I just finished reading Dinner With Lisa by R.L. Prendergast. The story is set in Canada during the depression. This is a very real depiction of the men and women of that time. The story is full of different characters and I learned each one’s history. If you enjoy novels with historical accuracy built into a good story line you should read this book.
Here is the beginning of Dinner with Lisa:
“The engine chuffed and the wheels clacked as the train powered its way through Ontario. Over glacier-scraped bedrock it passed, through forest of dark green pine and budding oak trees toward the plains of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, where years of unrelenting sun and suffocating dust had baked the once fertile earth dry and hard.”
